National Lumber's original location in Roxbury, Massachusetts

National Lumber's Company History — 1934 Founded in Roxbury

Morris Kaitz opened the first National Lumber Company lumberyard in Roxbury, MA, serving builders in the Boston area with the professional service prevalent in those days. Morris and his sons Harold, Samuel, Louis and John worked hard to make the business grow. At that time, lumber was stocked by hand, with no help at all from the machines that are taken for granted today. It was very labor intensive work, but they moved a lot of lumber for their growing customer base.

Today, third generation owners brother Steven Kaitz and sister Margie Kaitz Seligman operate the National Lumber Family of Companies —  New England's largest independent supplier of building materials and experts in building related services. With pride, this family owned and operated business continues supplying and serving the building industry, and homeowners, with 14 locations across New England.

1990's The Business Expands

In the early 1990’s it became clear that Babel’s was not just a paint and wallpaper store. With the addition of professional designers, it had grown into a full-service decorating center. In 1994, the store name was officially changed to Babel’s Paint & Decorating Store.

In 1996 Vic and Jeanne opened their second store in Jeanne’s hometown of Needham, MA, followed three years later with the addition of the Foxboro store.

2005 to Present

In 2005, Babel's acquired a paint store in Canton at Cobb’s Corner which they quickly renovated to include design services.

From 400 square feet in 1950, Babel’s stores grew to five locations around the Greater Boston area. With more than 35 employees – Babel's has been pleased to continue its path of growth, success, and service to the community.

In March 2016, Babel’s Paint & Decorating became part of the National Lumber Family of Companies. Although ownership has changed, Babel’s will continue to operate as usual — same products, same employees and, most importantly, the same personal and knowledgeable service.

As a family owned and operated company, founded in 1934, National Lumber will carry on the legacy of Babel's, offering exceptional customer service and quality products at competitive pricing.
